Prelude is due to be redesigned for 2003, reportedly as a somewhat larger sporty coupe based on the Accord platform instead of the model's traditional Civic foundation. But U.S. buyers probably won't see it, as industry sources now say Honda will axe Prelude after the current model year. The reason: sales keep on sliding big time. The calendar-2000 tally of 9692 was down 15 percent from the comparable '99 total, which in turn was off 26 percent from 1998. That has evidently led Honda to flip-flop. Though the company has long insisted that Prelude will continue no matter what, a well placed industry trade journal recently quoted a high-ranking U.S. executive as saying he would drop Prelude as soon as possible if the decision were his alone.

Honda plans to discontinue Prelude

A report in U.S.A Today quotes American Honda Executive Vice-President, Dick Colliver as saying that Honda will scrap the Prelude sports coupe next year. He said it would be replaced by a 2003 model "with a completely different design". Colliver was quoted as saying that the costs of building and importing the Japan-built Prelude were too high.
